In California a new driver usually gets added to the household's existing auto policy rather than buying a separate one, and most carriers require every licensed driver in the home to be listed or formally excluded. Teens under 18 start with a provisional license that limits late-night driving and passengers for the first 12 months.
The path to a license for teens
Teens can apply for an instruction permit at 15½, must hold it for at least six months and complete supervised practice, then take the drive test for a provisional license. For the first 12 months a provisional driver cannot drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. or carry passengers under 20 unless a parent, guardian or other licensed driver 25 or older is in the car, with limited exceptions. The restrictions end at 18.
When to call the insurance office
Call when the license is issued, not after the first trip. A licensed driver living in the home who is not on the policy can cause trouble on a claim. Some carriers also ask about permit holders, so ask what yours requires.
What moves the price
California law makes driving record, annual miles driven and years of driving experience the main rating factors, which is why a brand-new driver costs more to insure. A clean record over time brings it down. Ask about the discounts each carrier offers, such as for good grades or a driver training course.
Adult new drivers
If you are getting your first California license as an adult, or switching from a foreign license, carriers treat your experience differently. Bring the license you have and Monge will tell you which carriers will write it.
